Amherst Boy Scouts Pack 296 and Troop 296 joined forces in November to help update and improve areas at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES). The scouts moved a rock wall, expanding the width of a heavily used trail; wood and kindling was moved and stacked for the outdoor and indoor fire pits; log placement was adjusted to create a circular seating area for students to enjoy; and benches and chairs were transported for winter storage. After their hard work, the boys enjoyed a steaming hot cup of cocoa provided by CWES.
In addition to community service, our local 296 scouts participate in outdoor adventures such as camping, hiking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and more. They learn how to apply math to everyday activities by geocaching, chess, and canoeing. As the cubs move from the Pack into the Troop, they learn skills like fire building and wilderness survival. There is knot-tying, knife safety, time management, and research.
Scouts help develop character, self-confidence, and responsibility. They also learn to collaborate and lead. It’s a great opportunity to make friends, play games, and work in teams. A big thank you to our community for supporting the local Cub Scouts in Pack 296 in their recent popcorn sale. The Pack raised enough money to send each scout to an upcoming trip to Lambeau Field and also help pay for camp and other activities.

Members of Pack 296’s Arrow of Light Den recently earned their first aid adventure badge for their rank at the Amherst Fire Department. Scouts trained on how to control bleeding with a tourniquet, proper techniques for a choking person, and what to do if they encountered someone needing first aid.
